Understanding Words

Reading material is made up of words.

But reading with understanding goes far beyond knowing the meaning of each single word.

When you read, you bring your own ideas and experience to the ideas and experience represented by the words on the page.

As you read, you think, you question, you remember, you make connections between ideas, you note the style the auther uses, you are aware of his purpose and his point of view.

You don't simply read separate words or phrases, or even sentences and paragraphs.
